Horse

SPIRIT, a beautiful quarter horse born in 2005, found his way to Animal Tracks in 2019 at the age of 14. Due to a bad navicular bone, he was deemed unrideable—a challenge that often makes it difficult for horses to find a forever home. But fate had other plans. At the time, Animal Tracks was home to an aging draft horse in need of a companion, and Spirit was the perfect match. From the moment they met, the two became inseparable, proving that even at a sanctuary for exotic animals, connections like these can change lives.

Although Animal Tracks primarily cares for wildlife rescues, our 70 dedicated volunteers ensure that every animal here finds their own champion. For Spirit, that champion is Bill—his best friend and devoted caretaker. The bond between them is undeniable; they run together as if they’re both horses, playing, frolicking, eating, and even grooming each other. Bill makes sure Spirit has all the best care, from fly masks and sprays to the latest horse treats.

But if you ask us, Spirit gives just as much as he receives. It’s a truly symbiotic relationship—one that reminds us of the power of companionship, trust, and the deep connections between humans and animals.
